The man has been arrested by the Delhi Police and has been accused of impersonating someone as an Intelligence Bureau (IB) officer to defraud people in east Delhi. Officials stated on Friday that the accused had gone absconding following an announcement that he was a proclaimed offender in a case that had been pending a long time.
The accused is a Vimal Bhat alias Sonu, a resident of Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh. Police said he was arrested in the Patparganj Industrial Area on January 29 after a period of constant surveillance.
As per inquirers, the case was committed as early as 2017 when Bhat impersonated himself as a senior IPS officer deployed with the Intelligence Bureau to defraud the members of the population. He allegedly had a counterfeit identity card to prove his fake qualifications and have a trustworthiness.
According to the police, the suspected person was always in a vehicle with stickers of POLICE on it, a siren and a loud hailer to create the impression of power and incarceration among unsuspecting members of the general population. In the process of arrest, police found a fake IB identity card, a walkie-talkie, police accessories, a siren, a loud hailer, and other identity card, which allegedly were issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs. A number of documents with fake government credentials were also confiscated.
According to such recoveries, the accused has been subject to various other offences involving cheating, forgery and the usage of the forged documents. According to the police, Bhat was declared a proclaimed offender on August 4, 2025, as the case that was registered at the Dwarka South police station was heard.
Additional check-ups indicated that Bhat is reportedly involved in a variety of other cases, including a 2020 case under the Negotiable Instruments Act in Udhampur, a case filed in 2018 in Naraina with very serious charges of violating sections 420, 419, 376, 493 and 377 of the IPC.
More research is being done to determine the extent of what he was involved in and his potential accomplices.
