NEW DELHI: Delhi Lieutenant Governor V.K. Saxena has directed the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) to begin identifying potential sites for developing ropeways across the Yamuna. The LG instructed the DDA to submit a preliminary report on the project within a month, according to a statement from Raj Niwas.
The proposed ropeways will operate from morning to night, with cable cars capable of carrying around 50 passengers each. The DDA plans to select sites near metro stations on both sides of the river while ensuring no encroachment or concretization of the floodplains.
Delhi LG directs that the project should prioritize locations within walkable distances from metro stations and DTC nodes. The initiative aims to provide a non-polluting alternative to existing transport modes, reducing dependency on buses, autos, and private vehicles that contribute to air pollution.
The ropeways are expected to ease traffic congestion on bridges and roads, offer quicker routes between residential and work areas, and save travel time. Additionally, the project will encourage walking and the use of public transport, aligning with Delhi’s goals for sustainable urban mobility.
In projects like Baansera and Asita on Yamuna floodplains, parking facilities are already located at a distance, encouraging visitors to walk through green areas and promote fitness. Similarly, the ropeway project will integrate eco-friendly design and public transport connectivity to enhance Delhi’s urban infrastructure.
