New Delhi: The ongoing family dispute over the personal wealth of late industrialist Sanjay Kapoor, estimated to be worth approximately ₹30,000 crore, has reached a decisive stage. The Delhi High Court on Wednesday reserved its decision on a petition seeking an interim stay after all parties in the case concluded their arguments. A bench headed by Justice Jyoti Singh clarified that no new arguments or documents would be accepted. The court’s upcoming order will determine the course of this inheritance battle and impact the future of the property dispute.
The crux of the case is the alleged will of the late industrialist Sanjay Kapoor, which states that his entire personal property is bequeathed to his third wife, Priya Kapoor. Karisma Kapoor and her children, Samaira and Kiaan Raj Kapoor, have challenged the will. Their lawyer, senior advocate Mahesh Jethmalani, told the court that the will contains several inconsistencies and technical flaws. He pointed out that the document uses feminine pronouns, Sanjay’s mother’s name is missing, the document is unregistered, and appears to have been prepared on a third party’s laptop. Jethmalani also argued that Priya Kapoor is the proposer and sole beneficiary of the will, so the court should thoroughly examine the document.
The family dispute over the will of late industrialist Sanjay Kapoor has deepened. His mother, Rani Kapoor, has also contested the will. Her lawyer, Senior Advocate Vaibhav Gaggar, stated in court that Sanjay was deeply attached to his children, mother, and family and could not have left his entire estate to Priya Kapoor alone. Rani Kapoor alleged that after Sanjay’s death, Priya Kapoor quickly tried to seize control of the business and properties. The list of assets submitted to the court is also incomplete. It does not include valuable paintings, watches, bank accounts, insurance, and rental income. An investigation revealed that Sanjay’s income was in crores, but the declared assets submitted to the court only amount to approximately ₹1.7 crore.
Priya Kapoor’s defense
Senior advocate Rajiv Nair, representing Priya Kapoor in the ongoing dispute over the estate of the late industrialist Sanjay Kapoor, denied all allegations in court. Nair stated that a complete list of assets, including financial records and affidavits, has been submitted to the court. He asserted that there is no evidence of concealment or transfer of assets abroad. The court was told that Sanjay’s claim of earning ₹60 crore annually is false. Furthermore, the allegation of an expensive Rolex watch was based on a fake social media account. He also stated that some corporate actions taken after his death were based on emails from Rani Kapoor, which she later denied. Priya’s lawyer also added that the format of the will is similar to Rani Kapoor’s 2024 will.
Written arguments from all parties have been submitted to the court. Now, an interim order is awaited, which will determine whether Priya Kapoor can transact with the property. According to experts, this case is not just a property dispute, but also a test of family relationships and trust. The court’s decision is expected soon, which will determine the course of this inheritance battle.
