Having just seven matches to play before the T20 world cup kicks off on February 7, poor performances by Shubman Gill have placed the team management in an awkward position. The T20I vice-captain of India has not been finding a place to excel since coming back to the team in the Asia Cup and his performances have been a point of debate, particularly given that Sanju Samson is still absent.

Test match victim Gill returned in the T20I leg having missed the ODI series against South Africa with a neck injury. Nevertheless, 4 and 0 and an undefeated 28 have not helped to soothe any alarm. As the clock ticks and time elapses before the world cup, the debate surrounding Gill in the XI has been getting louder.

In response to the incident, former India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has recommended that a performance evaluation of Gill be done after the rest of the matches in Lucknow and Ahmedabad. Ashwin emphasized that resigning a vice-captain is a decision that cannot be made easily and must be looked at only after the player has been given a reasonable chance.

“I am a little concerned. Shubman is not only an opener but also a vice- captain. How are you going to oust a vice-captain? It is an extremely difficult choice, Ashwin said on his show Ash ki Baat. He further opined that in case Gill does not perform in the five games, then the management would need to make a call though the call will be an unpleasant one.

The dip of the form used by Gill is not that new. The batter has been able to achieve only one international century, 129, since he toured England prolifically and made more than 700 runs. His T20 I statistics have been a disaster especially as he has scored 127 in seven matches in the Asia cup and 132 in five in Australia.
