National Security Advisor Ajit Doval will be traveling to Moscow this week to hold discussions aimed at resolving the Russia-Ukraine conflict, highlighting India’s expanding role as a mediator in the prolonged conflict, which has been ongoing for over two-and-a-half years now and has had significant global repercussions. This comes after Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited both Russia and Ukraine in the past two months and met its leaders Vladimir Putin and Volodymyr Zelensky.
Later, in a phone call with President Putin on August 27, the two leaders reportedly discussed India’s role in mediating peace. As per this phone call, the leaders discussed sending India’s NSA to Moscow to explore ideas for achieving lasting peace in Ukraine, stated sources cited in a CNN-News18 report.
While the exact timing of Doval’s visit to Russia is not yet confirmed, it underscores India’s proactive engagement in seeking a resolution to the conflict. PM Modi’s diplomatic efforts also include discussions with US President Joe Biden, further highlighting India’s central role in international peace initiatives.
The need to resolve the long drawn conflict was intimated by Russia first. “We respect our friends and partners who I think are sincerely interested in addressing and resolving all the issues associated with the conflict (with Ukraine). China, Brazil, India… I am in contact with my partners and I have no doubt that the leaders of these countries, and we have the relations of trust and confidence with one another, will be really interested in providing a helping hand,” stated the Russian President at the 9th Eastern Economic Forum in Vladivostok.
This sentiment was echoed by Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, on September 7, at the Ambrosetti Forum in northern Italy’s Cernobbio where she also held a meeting with Ukrainian President Zelensky. She highlighted India’s growing influence in global diplomacy and stressed the importance of major nations like India and China in addressing the crisis in Ukraine.
