AIMIM President Asaduddin Owaisi and Congress MP Muhammad Jawed approached the Supreme Court to challenge the constitutional validity of the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2025. Both Owaisi and Jawed were members of the Joint Parliamentary Committee on the Waqf Bill.
Hours after the Bill was passed, the Congress had said that it would challenge the legislation in the apex court “very soon”. Congress general secretary in-charge for communications, Jairam Ramesh, said that the party would “continue to resist all assaults of the Modi Govt on the principles, provisions, and practices that are contained in the Constitution of India”.
The Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2025, has triggered significant legal and political contention, with AIMIM President Asaduddin Owaisi and Congress MP Muhammad Jawed challenging its constitutional validity in the Supreme Court. Their move signifies a strong opposition to the legislation, which has been the subject of intense debate.
The core of their challenge revolves around the claim that the bill infringes upon the fundamental rights of the Muslim community. They argue that the amendments impose “arbitrary restrictions” on the management of Waqf properties, thus undermining the religious autonomy guaranteed by the Constitution.
