New Delhi: The Sports Ministry on Tuesday lifted the suspension of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI), paving the way for the organisation of domestic tournaments and the selection of national teams for international tournaments.
The Sports Ministry’s decision to revoke the suspension of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) marks a significant turning point for Indian wrestling. After months of turmoil and administrative upheaval, the move allows the sport to resume its normal functioning, facilitating the organization of domestic and international competitions.
The suspension, initially imposed due to concerns over governance and the handling of sexual harassment allegations against former WFI president Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, had severely hampered the progress of Indian wrestlers. The inability to conduct national trials and select teams for international events created uncertainty and disrupted training schedules, impacting athletes’ preparations for major tournaments.
The Sanjay Singh-led panel had won the elections on December 21, 2023 but the choice of venue for National Championships in Nandini Nagar, Gonda – the stronghold of former WFI chief Brijbhushan Sharan Singh – had irked the government.
The ministry, in its order, said that the WFI has taken corrective measures, so it has decided to lift the suspension.
The lifting of the suspension comes with expectations of improved governance and transparency within the WFI. The ministry’s directive underscores the importance of adhering to ethical standards and ensuring a safe environment for wrestlers, particularly female athletes. The newly elected WFI body is now tasked with implementing robust mechanisms to address grievances and prevent future misconduct.
