Himmatnagar: A massive police case has been registered against approximately 1,000 individuals, including a former Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA), following a violent protest by dairy farmers outside Sabar Dairy in Gujarat’s Sabarkantha district. The demonstrators are accused of attacking police personnel and causing significant damage to public property during the Monday agitation, an official confirmed on Tuesday.
According to Deputy Superintendent of Police (Hereafter referred to as DySP) A.K. Patel, a large number of dairy farmers had gathered outside the dairy premises near Himmatnagar town, demanding a substantial increase in milk procurement prices.
“The protestors indulged in violence, hurled stones at policemen, and damaged the main gate of the dairy. Three policemen were injured, and four police vehicles were damaged in the stone pelting. Police had lobbed nearly 50 teargas shells to disperse the mob,” the DySP said.
“We have so far arrested 47 persons while efforts are on to nab others. It was claimed that one Ashok Patel lost his life during the protest. However, his post-mortem report stated that he did not die due to any external injury,” the official said.
Earlier on Sunday, a number of these farmers from around 50 villages in Olpad taluka gathered at Anand Ashram in Bhadol village to protest against the Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (PGCIL). The farmers, gathered under the aegis of Khedut Samaj Gujarat (KSG), announced plans to take out a tractor rally this week in Surat.
