NEW DELHI: The Sports ministry on Thursday delivered an ultimatum to the Wrestling Federation of India President Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh and has given him 24 hours to resign from his post, according to sources.
The statement came after Union Minister held a meeting with protesting wrestlers at his residence. Bajrang Punia, Vinesh Phogat, Sakshi Malik and Ravi Dahiya were among the wrestlers who met with the minister on Thursday.
Earlier in the day, it was reported that Brij Bhushan may offer his resignation from the post of President at the Emergent General Council meeting on January 22.However, he later clarified that he wouldn’t resign with the tag of a criminal.
“I had said it on the first day if they have any proof then make them public. I also said that if the sexual harassment charges against me are proven I am ready to be hanged,” Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh told on Thursday, January 19.
Phogat along with other wrestlers sat on a silent protest at Jantar Mantar for the second day against WFI chief on Thursday.
Vinesh Phogat, the first Indian woman wrestler to win gold in both Commonwealth and Asian Games, broke down while speaking to the press. In a startling revelation, Phogat alleged that Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh had been sexually exploiting women wrestlers for years. She said that Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, president of the Wrestling Federation of India and other trainers were culpable.
