YouTube is set to introduce a range of artificial intelligence (AI) powered features for content creators, marking the latest endeavour by its parent company, Alphabet, to incorporate generative AI technology into its key products and services. Generative AI can generate and synthesize various forms of media, including text, images, music, and more, based on simple prompts.
One of the notable products announced by YouTube is “Dream Screen,” a tool harnessing generative AI to incorporate video or image backgrounds into short-form videos known as “Shorts.” Additionally, YouTube unveiled AI-driven production tools designed to aid in the editing of both short-form and long-form videos hosted on its platform.
Toni Reid, Vice President for Community Products at YouTube, emphasized the aim of these new products and features, stating that they will empower users to expand the boundaries of creative expression. YouTube first revealed its development of these tools back in March.
Google, YouTube’s parent company, has been under pressure to demonstrate tangible results and practical applications for its generative AI offerings. Some critics expressed concerns that Google, once considered a leader in artificial intelligence, was falling behind newer players like OpenAI or its competitor Microsoft. These newer entrants have gained widespread popularity with products such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Microsoft’s new Bing chatbot, particularly since Microsoft has invested a substantial $13 billion in OpenAI since 2019.
YouTube’s move to introduce AI-powered features for content creators not only aims to enhance the platform’s user experience but also reflects the broader trend of AI integration in various digital media and entertainment industries.
