Twitter, which is now called popular social media platform X, underwent a huge crash on Tuesday, which left thousands of users without the ability to use the service. The glitch affected so many individuals not only in India but worldwide according to outage-tracking site, Downdetector. Till 5:03 pm IST, more than 988 users in India had complained of being unable to use X and around the world, there had been over 11320 reports by 5:05 pm. The problem was hardly fixed as many of the users that were able to gain access briefly stated that the site was downed again soon after.
Due to the outage, users, doubting their own judgement, rushed to X itself, when it was online, to inquire as to whether the platform was not functioning, which gave rise to a surge of posts on the question: Is X down. The intermittency of the service was also a contributing factor towards the frustration and some of the users reported slow loading, no timeline or even downright inaccessibility.
X was not the only disrupted one. Other key infrastructure and security platforms and services were also hit as it seems that there exists an overarching problem with Cloudflare, a web infrastructure and security provider. Some people could not see sites like Canva, ChatGPT, Perplexity, and others, and some of them were exceptionally slow. At the same time outages were a very strong hint that the root of the problem was with Cloudflare and not individual platforms.
Later, Cloudflare made a formal update accepting that it was conscious of a problem affecting a large number of customers: Widespread 500 errors, Cloudflare Dashboard and API also failing. The company failed to give a timeline on forcing the matter on the spot, but it assured that its engineering staffs are already busy in restoring normalcy.
Meanwhile, X did not declare some official position on the issue of the outage that contributes to uncertainty among the users.
