Mumbai: Bhavish Aggarwal, founder of Ola Cabs and Electric, launched India’s first Artificial Intelligence (AI) model ‘Krutrim’ on 15 December. This model will compete with OpenAI’s chatbot ChatGPT and Google’s Bard. During the launch event, Agarwal showed off an artificial intelligence-powered AI chatbot that answers questions like ChatGPT and Bard.
Named after the Sanskrit word for “artificial,” Krutrim is a family of large language models (LLMs) specifically designed to cater to the unique linguistic and cultural context of India. Unlike existing LLMs trained primarily on English data, Kritrim understands and responds to 22 Indian languages, including Hindi, Bengali, Tamil, and Malayalam. This makes it a powerful tool for a multitude of applications, from education and healthcare to customer service and entertainment, all in the languages familiar to millions of Indians.
The company says that this is a groundbreaking project, whose focus is to develop India’s first full stack AI solution. The company has introduced its two models – Artificial and Artificial Pro. Let us know what is special in these AI models.
Kritrim isn’t just about language processing. Aggarwal’s vision extends to building a comprehensive AI ecosystem in India. Krutrim Si Designs, the company behind Kritrim, plans to develop its own AI chips in the coming months, aiming for greater efficiency and cost-effectiveness. This push towards hardware independence signifies a long-term commitment to creating a self-sufficient Indian AI infrastructure.
India’s AI journey is still in its early stages. Issues like data privacy, ethical considerations, and talent acquisition need careful attention. However, Aggarwal’s initiative with Krubhavishtrim demonstrates a much-needed entrepreneurial spirit and a bold vision for India’s place in the global AI race.
More than just another business venture, Krutrim represents a significant step towards building a future where AI serves not just the tech giants but also the diverse needs and aspirations of India’s billion-strong population. Aggarwal’s commitment to developing an AI ecosystem rooted in Indian languages and cultural contexts could pave the way for a more inclusive and equitable AI future, not just for India but for the world.
