Apple’s highly anticipated entry into the foldable market, often referred to as the “iPhone Fold,” is generating significant buzz as recent leaks provide a clearer picture of its unconventional design strategy. While competitors like Samsung and Google have moved toward larger, smartphone-sized cover screens, Apple appears to be taking a “secondary-first” approach for its folded state.
Concept images shared online have added to the debate. Designer Ben Geskin released photos and videos of a printed mock-up based on the reported measurements.
A Compact “Cover” Experience
Recent reports from The Information and various supply chain analysts suggest the device will feature an outer display measuring just 5.3 to 5.5 inches. For context:
- Smaller than the Mini: This is even more compact than the iPhone 13 mini, which featured a 5.4-inch screen.
- Aspect Ratio: Leaked CAD renders indicate a “short and wide” aspect ratio. When closed, the device may feel more like a small, pocketable passport than a traditional phone.
- Secondary Role: This suggests Apple views the outer screen primarily for “glanceable” information—notifications, quick replies, and widgets—rather than full-scale app usage.
Industry sources suggest that Apple may treat the folded mode as a secondary option. Users may rely on the outer screen for notifications, short replies, or basic tasks. For longer sessions, the device would open to reveal the larger inner display. This approach separates Apple’s concept from foldable phones that aim to function fully even when closed.
