After OpenAI’s launch of ChatGPT Atlas, its first web browser powered by AI, on Tuesday, Google’s market value decreased by close to $100 billion. The company’s stock dropped by approximately 5 percent, as the new web browser puts OpenAI in direct competition with Google, which has about 3 billion users globally on its Chrome browser. Google also announced it was also integrating AI features from its new Gemini technology into its browser, but ChatGPT Atlas brings OpenAI into the online browser and search space further as a legitimate competitor.

ChatGPT Atlas was built to personalize online experiences for tasks like booking flights, making edits to documents, and surfing on websites more easily. When a user opens any site, an “Ask ChatGPT” sidebar is displayed to engage the websites content in a more interactive way.

OpenAI’s paid and free chatbot currently has over 800 million users, and the company is looking at more opportunities to revenue with the browser. The launch could increase internet traffic to OpenAI’s platforms and help its advertising growth in digital.
