NEW DELHI – In a move that has sent ripples through the academic and tech communities, authorities ordered Galgotias University to immediately vacate its exhibition stall at the India AI Impact Summit 2026, held at Bharat Mandapam, on Wednesday. The directive follows a wave of social media backlash and government concerns over what has been termed a “national embarrassment”: the university allegedly misrepresenting a commercially available Chinese robotic dog as its own indigenous innovation.

The controversy erupted after a video from the summit went viral, showing a university representative demonstrating a quadruped robot named “Orion.” In the footage, the representative claimed the university’s Centre of Excellence developed the robot as part of a major ₹350 crore investment in Artificial Intelligence. However, eagle-eyed tech enthusiasts and netizens quickly identified “Orion” as the Unitree Go2, a popular robotic dog manufactured by the Chinese firm Unitree Robotics, which is available for public purchase online for approximately ₹2.5 lakh.

Government sources indicated that the incident was viewed as a severe case of misrepresentation at a high-profile international event intended to showcase India’s domestic AI capabilities. “Projecting imported Chinese technology as in-house Indian innovation at a global summit is an embarrassment to the nation’s ‘Make in India’ aspirations,” an official stated. A show-cause notice has reportedly been issued to the institution.

In response, Galgotias University issued a clarification on social media, asserting that it never officially claimed to have manufactured the robot. The university maintained that the device was acquired as a “classroom in motion” to provide students with hands-on exposure to global technologies. However, this defense was met with further skepticism, as X (formerly Twitter) users pointed to the branding and the specific verbal claims made during the summit. As of Wednesday afternoon, the university’s presence at the expo has been terminated, leaving a vacant spot in one of the Global South’s most significant AI gatherings.
