Parts of the West Garo Hills of Meghalaya were in tension after a youth was allegedly lynched by a mob in the Rajabala vicinity near an illegal quarry of stones which led to prompt police action and political denunciation. The act took place on Friday afternoon, and caused overnight security force raids on the case that saw the arrest of three suspects, the officials announced on Saturday.
Police said that the victim belonged to a local non-governmental organisation (NGO) that their members had arrived at the location in three vehicles to confirm that illegal stone quarrying was taking place in the region. Some of the members of the NGO were attacked but the individuals who were travelling in one SUV escaped and reported to the authorities about the attack.
West Garo Hills Superintendent of Police Abraham T. Sangma said that the situation was under close check and large scale man hunt was underway to capture the rest of the suspects. He further said that the owners of the illegal quarry are highly suspected to be involved in the lynching and are now on the run. Several police departments have been assigned around the region of Rajabala to monitor them.
The arrests of three people are indicated after the operations overnight. Raids are still ongoing and all individuals in the crime will be charged to book. There is a registered case, and an intensive investigation is going on to determine the chronology of events and everyone involved in the incident.
The killing was greatly condemned by Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma who termed the act to be a heinous one that has left the state in shock. Showing immense sadness regarding the loss of a young person, he offered his apologies to the family of the victim and promised to take tough measures over the criminals.
