On Tuesday, the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of West Bengal published the list of names which had been deleted by the state in its draft electoral roll in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise. The revised copy of voter list in 2026 indicates that over 58 lakh existing voters have been erased because of different reasons such as death, permanent migration, duplication of entries, and missing voters.

As the official sources of the WB CEO office note, the number of deleted names is 5,820,898 to be exact. The list is currently available online so that it is transparent and the voters can check their status. According to the clarification given by the Election Commission, the revision is a regular activity that is designed to ensure the accuracy and integrity of electoral rolls.

Raising their concerns, the Election Commission officials have added in a statement in the portal that aggrieved persons who feel that their names have been deleted can file claims by submitting Form 6 as well as a declaration form and supporting documents. The deadline to make claims and objections is the set time interval after the release of the Draft Roll 2026 and it will be open to January 15, 2026. The last electoral rolls would be released after this deadline.

Fine disaggregation of data indicates that the number of voters marked as dead in the course of the verification was more than 24 lakh. Approximately 12 lakh voters had been termed missing after the officials had not been able to locate them at their addresses. Almost 20 lakh names were eliminated since the voters were discovered to have permanently changed their constituencies. Also, approximately 1.38 lakh records were deleted because of overlapping in the voter database.

According to the officials, over 57,000 names were deleted on other grounds than those mentioned such as wrong information and administrative mistakes.
