Kerala reported violence in various sections of the state, mostly in the northern region, after the local body election results were announced, police officials said on Sunday. The situation took a turn on high gear as political attacks and confrontations were reported against conflicting political parties in various places throughout the night.
The tense situation continued in Eramala in the Kozhikode district, where the Indira Gandhi Bhavan, an office of the Congress party, was attacked allegedly by the CPI workers during the night. A First Information Report registered at Edachery police station mentioned that nearly 200 individuals marched towards the office with weapons and broke into the building. It is estimated that the damage costs around 5 lakh. The incidence was also reported to have damaged a statue of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.
Just after the attack in Kerala, supporters of the United Democratic Front (UDF) rushed to the location, and this created even more tension. Police were used to deploy more forces, and the situation was subsequently brought under control.
There was another report by an incident in Marad where stoned were said to be thrown at a UDF victory procession that saw several people being injured. Police claimed that cases are registered and investigations are being done.
In Sultan Bathery in the Wayanad district, a car that transported a UDF activist and the family members was reportedly assaulted by a group of some 40 CPI(M) workers. The incident was linked to a case registered by the police. In another episode in the same region, the UDF employees were also arrested over allegations of assaulting an additional supporter of CPI(M) who had objected to the bursting of firecrackers around his house.
New violence was reported too in Panoor in the Kannur district, where houses of some of the Muslim League activists were reportedly attacked and vehicles parked outside were destroyed. The clashes, according to the police, broke out after allegations of a UDF victory rally being halted by CPI(M) workers wielding swords and daggers. A number of UDF leaders are said to have been injured.
