On Friday, Tamil actor-turned-politician Vijay, who recently floated his party Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), held the first of its general council meetings attacking the governments in Tamil Nadu and at the Centre. Addressing the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Vijay said both were ‘fascists’, but were ‘under a covert understanding’.
“Take votes from DMK on Congress side, but for siphoning loot, it has a secret understanding with BJP,” Vijay said, claiming that the BJP is the ‘secret owner’ of the DMK. He strongly opposed the delimitation on a population basis, the imposition of Hindi and the uneven distribution of central funds unevenly. He openly rapped at Prime Minister Narendra Modi when he addressed people, saying, “PM sir, we understand your plans when you talk about one nation, one election. Handle Tamil Nadu carefully, sir. It has shown itself to be a state strong again and again.”
The Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly had passed the Waqf Bill and central schemes for withdrawal and Vijay’s party opened 17 resolutions detailing TVK’s point of view over these and other key issues. Vijay has repeatedly identified the BJP as his ideological enemy and said that the DMK is his political rival since he announced his political entry last year with an eye on contesting the 2026 Tamil Nadu assembly elections. There is a different kind of election coming in Tamil Nadu. “This is the real contest between two parties and that is TVK and the DMK,” he said.
Vijay then sharpened his attack on Chief Minister MK Stalin, accusing the state government of not being able to protect women and maintain law and order. He castigated the DMK government holding a chief minister king of the kingdom and said: “From the moment you (the present chief minister) ruled like a monarch, our women would have been secured if you had been able to govern”.
