Actor-turned-politician Vijay, the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief, has declared that he will contest the impending Tamil Nadu assembly elections this year, in the Madurai East constituency. By making this statement clear, Vijay has weighed his chips to establish TVK as a viable third front in the political pole of the state and guard off the reign of both the DMK and the AIADMK.

This was informed as reported on Thursday afternoon at a huge rally in Madurai, where thousands of fans jammed to listen to the TVK leader. His speech was categorical and ruled out the possibility of any electoral alliances and indicated clearly that TVK would enter the poll arena on its own. He singled out the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) as being the ideological foe of his party and the ruling DMK as the political foe.

We now have only one ideological foe, it is the BJP, and one political foe, and it is DMK. Vijay stated that VK is not a party formed to achieve political benefits, but a movement that will really transform the people of Tamil Nadu, causing cheers from the crowd.

On formation last year, TVK has positioned itself as a potential alternative force in the politics of Tamil Nadu to break the established two-party system, DMK, AIADMK. Selecting to contest in Madurai East, a politically important area, appears to be one of the attempts by Vijay to break the shackles of the situation and make it clear how committed he is to grassroots-level politics and how confident he is there at the grassroots to mobilize his supporters.

General elections in the state of Tamil Nadu will be carried out in 2026, and this is the first real test for Vijay and his party. His popularity as a celebrated actor, as well as his increasing political appeal, is making Vijay seek to redefine the political discourse in the state as he presents TVK as a new and uncompromised face.
