The film The Sabarmati Report, which is based on the 2002 Godhra train burning incident, will be tax-free in Uttar Pradesh, said Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. The announcement came on Thursday, following the Chief Minister’s watching a special preview of the film in Lucknow in the presence of lead man Vikrant Massey and the rest of the team crew members. Another honourable chief guest who attended the screening was Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak.
Such hand gestures by the CM pay much attention to the movie, enlightening the audience about the tragedy that occurred on February 27, 2002. Coach no S-6 of Sabarmati Express was burnt at Godhra station in Gujarat that day, in which sixty-one Hindus lost their lives, all of them being pilgrims on their way to Ayodhya. It spurred riots all across Gujarat and is one of the worst nightmares in Indian history.
Vikrant Massey, the actor in the film, also thanked the government of Uttar Pradesh and CM Yogi Adityanath for backing the film. “I believe that this is an important film, and I kindly urge people to watch it,” Massey said during the event.
The screening was followed by a meeting between the UP CM, Yogi Adityanath, and the actor Vikrant Massey in the latter’s residence, where the two had a brief on the contents of the film as well as the reason behind the making of the film. By making the film tax-free, its makers anticipate its circulation among the population of Uttar Pradesh will increase and affect its members through raising awareness of the issue.
The Sabarmati Report focuses on the socio-political consequences of the Godhra carnage and its cascading effects to make people conscious of the history of our country. The tax exemption reaffirms what the government considers as education and reflection on critical historical aspects by watching cinematic productions.
