Vrindavan: In Vrindavan, a tragic pilgrimage tour led to the deaths of at least 10 people and 22 others were rescued when the boat that was carrying more than 30 visitors capsized in the Yamuna River. It happened on Friday afternoon in Mathra district with the boat being hired by a party of tourists, chiefly of Jagraon, Ludhiana, on a joy ride out of Keshi Ghat.

One of the videos that emerged soon after the tragedy captures the scene before the accident, with the passengers cheering and chanting Radhe Radhe in the background, as they were enjoying their ride. Worryingly, the recording also shows that no one among the passengers was wearing a life jacket, which casts a lot of doubt on safety compliance and preparedness.

Preliminary reports suggested the accident could have been caused by the changing river conditions after the recent demolition of a nearby pontoon bridge as a result of increased water levels. The change in the water flow is thought to have destabilised the boat and led to its overturning.

The local police, as well as emergency services, rushed to the scene and organized a rapid operation, saving several of the passengers. But the death of people has helped put a dark cloud in the sacred town where thousands of pilgrims flow in every day.

The government has already opened an inquiry into the accident, which is based on potential negligence, overcrowding, and safety measures. The disaster has re-emphasized the necessity to enforce more stringent boating laws and enhance security facilities in tourist and religious spots.
