Badaun: More than a thousand people in Soraha village in Uttar Pradesh’s Badaun district are experiencing an acute power outage since the electricity transformer vital part was stolen on December 14 by thieves. The theft has deprived the village of electricity for weeks, and all this has amounted to many deprivations for the villagers.
The transformer, a 250KVA unit, was noticed missing the next day by the villagers when they were going about their normal business. In detail, it was established beyond doubt that such vital structures as copper wires, oil and other metal parts were stolen. This woman was later said to have left the abandoned empty transformer in a nearby field.
This theft is especially unfortunate for the residents, given that the winter season and thick fog have blanketed most parts of northern India. The problem of power failure has really affected normal life, especially for students preparing for state board exams next month. Speaking on the issue, the head of the village, Satpal Singh, said, “If there is no power, inverters and mobile phones are nothing, and submersible pumps are dead”.
In connection to the situation, Narendra Chaudhary, who is an executive engineer in the electricity department, sought to calm the public by saying that there was a temporary power supply that had been drawn from the neighbouring village. He said that such thefts are usually common in the winter periods and that more police patrols had been called for.
But many villagers have complained of dissatisfaction, claiming that officials from their local government have let them down and want a more lasting solution. In order to solve the crime, the police have registered an FIR under section 154 CrPC for unknown persons. Previous activities, such as monitoring of telephone calls made on mobile phones and watching of CCTV footage, have produced some leads. There are also indications by the officials that the act of theft of a live wire shows clearly that insiders must have aided the work of the thieves.
