Samajwadi Party (SP) leader Abdullah Azam Khan was released from Hardoi Jail in Uttar Pradesh on Tuesday after 17 months behind bars. Leaders of the party, supporters and well-wishers gathered outside the prison to celebrate his release.
Abdullah, dressed in a white kurta-pyjama with a dark-coloured sleeveless waistcoat, stepped out of the jail complex at around 12 noon accompanied by security men. He dressed in a neat ponytail and did not answer the media.
Legal Struggles and Bail Grant
Abdullah Azam Khan is the son of senior SP leader and former minister Azam Khan, who is currently lodged in jail. Since 2001, Abdullah has been registered in 45 cases, including one for machine theft. But the bail had been secured in all of them.
According to his lawyer Satnam Singh Nattu, outside Hardoi jail: ‘As the whole country knows, Mohammad Azam Khan, his family has been persecuted and jailed.’ We thank the lord for the way to release Abdullah Bhai from the Jail. Finally, he will walk free and go home today.”
Recently, a special magistrate trial court MP/MLA Judge Shobhit Bansal granted him bail in 2020 in an enemy property case. However, his release was delayed on procedural matters relating to verifying bail. The MP-MLA Magistrate Trial Court on Monday sent the release order to Hardoi Jail after which Raja will be free.
Supporters and Party Leaders Rejoice
When news was given about his imminent release, there was a spontaneous gathering of SP supporters outside the prison. Among them was SP leader and Moradabad MP Ruchi Veera, who still trusted the judiciary.
