Six passengers were killed after being hit by a train while crossing the railway tracks at Chunar Junction in Uttar Pradesh’s Mirzapur district on Wednesday morning, barely a day after another major train accident in Chhattisgarh claimed 11 lives.

The accident occurred around 9:30 am when the victims, reported to be pilgrims on their way to Varanasi for Kartik Purnima rituals, were struck by a fast-moving express train. According to railway officials, the passengers had just alighted from the Chopan-Prayagraj Express, which had stopped at Platform No. 4. Instead of using the available foot over-bridge, they chose to trespass and cross the main line track.

They were hit by the speeding Netaji Express (Kalka Mail), which was passing through Platform No. 3 without a scheduled stop at Chunar. The impact was immediate and devastating, resulting in the instant death of six individuals and leaving several others critically injured.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath took cognizance of the incident and expressed condolences to the families of the deceased. He directed senior officials to reach the site and ensure that relief and rescue operations were carried out swiftly. The Chief Minister also instructed the SDRF and NDRF teams to assist in the operation and ordered that the injured receive prompt medical treatment.
