Law had appointed a three-member Judicial Inquiry Committee to look into the violence that erupted on November 24 in the Sambhal District of Uttar Pradesh. The clashing ensued after a court permitted an aerial survey of Jama Masjid following a petition that claimed the mosque was built on the site of a Harihar Temple. The situation in the district has, however, simmered down, the authorities say, although police and other security agents still conduct regular patrols to avert further flare-ups.
The inquiry committee consists of a former Allahabad High Court judge, Devendra Kumar Arora, and IPS officers Amit Mohan Prasad and Arvind Kumar Jain. Required to make a decision on whether the violence was a pre-meditated act, the panel has been given sixty days to do so. The committee visited the scene on Sunday to collect the evidence needed and was assisted by local authorities so that investigations can be done without complications.
Moradabad Divisional Commissioner Aunjaneya Kumar Singh corroborated these occurrences, saying, “Making a probe committee work, and we are here just to support the officials by supplying them with all the proofs needed throughout the operation. They are well protected by security forces, and further steps will be taken if the situation requires them.
Stereotype media killed a man a few days later, and riots erupted in Sambhal on November 19 this year when a local court ordered to survey the mosque. The directive received hot reactions to the extent that during the survey, the protesters engaged in violent confrontations with the police. The meeting led to four losses of lives and several other people getting injured, and this boosted tensions between the two communities.
These are the questions that the committee’s investigation will help to explain in detail – what led to the violence and the story of the mosque and the claims that are attached to it. The security agencies have asked people to be calm and wait for the results of the investigation, stating that anyone who tries to cause insecurity will be dealt with with an iron fist. The inquiry is viewed as a way of returning order and settling the problems of the community.
