Meerut: In the continuing case of the brutal murder of her husband Saurabh Rajput in Uttar Pradesh’s Meerut, prime accused Muskan Rastogi has made a request to the court to appoint a government defense counsel on her behalf. Jail officials said Muskan told them her family is upset with her and has not come to fight for her or help in her case in court.

Sahil Shukla and his lover, Muskan Rastogi, are lodged in Meerut District Jail. According to the duo, they killed Rajput on March 4 by stabbing him to death and subsequently dismembered his body into several pieces and tried to conceal the crime by stuffing them into a drum filled with cement.

According to jail protocols, both accused are kept in separate barracks without interaction. They were confirmed to be being kept separately by jail Superintendent Viresh Raj Sharma, senior of the jail. “Muskan had asked me to meet her yesterday.” While at the meeting, she said that her family has no relation to her and will give no help in legal defense. Therefore, she asked the court to appoint a government defense lawyer for her. Sharma said that her request is proper because she is an inmate and that we are forwarding it.

But Muskan and Sahil reportedly had been diagnosed as suffering from substance abuse problems. Sahil has expressed his wish for marijuana, while Muskan has been asking for morphine injections inside the jail. But jail authorities have said both have refused food, a routine during withdrawal periods.

Superintendent Sharma further said that both the accused underwent treatment of their withdrawal symptoms with prescribed medications and counseling sessions and were also linked to de-addiction programs. Public interest remains high in crime because of the grotesque nature of the crime, as well as the problems that the accused continues to struggle with.
