On Wednesday, Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) president Mayawati was happy with the cancellation of a controversial offer to develop a Shivalaya Park within the Gautam Buddha Park in Kanpur. The project attracted intense criticism from opposition parties and social quarters; however, it was parked after people raised concerns.
In a post on X, Mayawati remarked, Media reports today say that the extremely controversial plan to construct a Shivalaya Park at the well-known Buddha Park in Kanpur has been called off. I am glad and thankful to the UP government for it has decided so. She also encouraged the state administration to make sure that this kind of dispute does not arise in the future. The government needs to take a stand so that peace, harmony, and brotherhood in society are not shaken, she continued.
The BSP supremo had previously termed the plan as completely out of order and had threatened on August 31 that it would result in lawlessness and create social strife in the event it was put into action.
In the meantime, Kanpur Mayor Pramila Pandey disassociated herself with the scandal and claimed that the offer was not hers and had not been ratified by the municipal board. It was all the personal initiative of the municipal commissioner, she explained. In the municipal house or executive committee, it was never talked of, nor was it ever brought to my attention. A few days ago, the commissioner had made a unilateral inspection of the park.
Pandey affirmed that the plan is currently being scrapped, although she added that Gautam Buddha Park, which was created under Mayawati’s leadership, is culturally and historically important to Dalit and Ambedkarites.
Commissioner of the municipality, Sudheer Kumar, however, brushed off the problem by claiming that his visit to the park last weekend was a normal inspection. However, an official source said that the planned park was based on the Shivalay Park in Prayagraj, and would have featured replicas of 12 Jyotirlingas to reflect their religious and cultural heritage.
