Kanpur: The loco-pilot of a goods train applied emergency brakes after he spotted a gas cylinder on railway tracks near Uttar Pradesh’s Prempur station on Sunday morning. The train was going from Kanpur to Prayagraj. The railway police removed it from the tracks and are probing the matter.
The train, en route from Kanpur to Prayagraj, halted safely at approximately 5:50 am. Railway police quickly responded to the scene, removing the cylinder and launching an investigation into the incident.
According to the Chief Public Relations Officer (CPRO) of North Central Railway, “A goods train traveling from Kanpur towards Prayagraj was stopped using the emergency brakes after the driver spotted a gas cylinder lying on the tracks at Prempur Station. Railway Inspector of Works (IOW), security teams, and other officials examined the cylinder and subsequently removed it from the tracks. Upon inspection, it was determined that the 5-litre cylinder was empty. Investigations into the matter have been initiated.”
This incident follows a close call earlier this month when the Prayagraj-Bhiwani Kalindi Express narrowly avoided disaster after colliding with an LPG cylinder placed on the tracks. Senior railway officials reported that the cylinder was intentionally placed to derail the train.
“An attempt was made to derail the Kalindi Express by putting the LPG cylinder on the tracks. Soon after receiving information, senior officers rushed to the site and launched an investigation. The forensics team was called in and the Railway Protection Force is also probing the matter,” a senior police official had said.
Earlier on Saturday, Western Railway’s Vadodara Division officials, an unknown person attempted to cause another train derailment by removing fishplates and keys from a railway track near Gujarat’s Kim Railway Station in Surat.
Western Railway claims that unknown people in the Vadodara division unlocked the fishplate and several keys from the UP line track and placed them on the same track close to the Kim railway station. However service was soon restored.
