Lucknow: The process of renaming cities continues in Uttar Pradesh, with Firozabad set to become Chandranagar. The Municipal Corporation’s proposal for the name change received unanimous approval in the Municipal Committee, garnering support from 11 out of 12 members. Additionally, there are reports of the Yogi government granting approval for changing the district’s name. The decision-making unfolded during a committee meeting held on Thursday at Jeevaram Hall, starting around 11:30 AM, slightly delayed from the scheduled time.
During the meeting, 17 proposals related to building modifications were discussed, with one proposal regarding the alteration of the district’s name being dismissed. The Municipal Executive Committee delved into crucial issues concerning the city and unanimously passed proposals. Notably, this move follows the renaming of Firozabad at the district level two years ago, changing it to Chandranagar. Now, with the Municipal Corporation also favoring the name Chandranagar, a green signal has been given for this transition.
While the proposal faced resistance from one out of the 12 committee members, Rehan, a Samajwadi Party representative, concerns about the burden on building owners were dismissed. All committee members rejected these concerns. Furthermore, there is news of an increase in fees associated with the name change receiving approval from the committee. In the meeting, discussions also touched upon the cost of constructing toilets under the Swachh Bharat Mission, city cleanliness, and encroachment-related issues.
The discussions prompted intervention from the Municipal Commissioner Ghanshyam Meena and Deputy Chairman Shyam Singh Yadav. Meanwhile, the committee approved proposals related to reconstruction projects associated with the 15th Finance Commission.
Despite the approval, some committee members emphasized the need to scrutinize the quality of construction work and address any irregularities by contractors. The overall deliberations highlighted a comprehensive review of various civic issues impacting Firozabad’s transformation into Chandranagar.
