Following the possible threat that the H5N1 avian influenza outbreak, also known as bird flu, is posing, Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath has instructed officials to take maximum precautions in all zoos and other wildlife in the state. Loading a high-level meeting on Tuesday, CM Adityanath laid emphasis on prioritizing the safety of birds and animals in our zoos, bird sanctuaries, national parks, wetland areas, and cow shelters.

An official statement says the Chief Minister ordered that precautionary measures should be taken quickly and adhere to the guidelines proclaimed by both central and state government authorities. These involve regular cleaning of the zoo premises, use of blow torches in high-risk areas, and a compulsion on mandatory tests for all wild birds and animals to identify the initial signs of infection. Besides, he directed close scrutiny on the food to be given to these animals to rule out the slightest possibility of contamination.

The zoo personnel have been advised to be up to date on the risks and protocols involving the avian flu. They will come along with PPE kits and other safety equipment. Responsibilities assigned to staff members working for animal enclosures will be spread depending on the risk assessment for optimum safety.

Moreover, the Chief Minister demanded proper surveillance of poultry farms and severe control over poultry products’ transportation, whereby cross-contamination was to be prohibited. He also advised the Health Department to take a proactive role and assess the effects of H5N1 on humans and act in issuing preventive measures for zoonotic transmission.

CM Yogi Adityanath stressed on unceasingly consorting with prime national institutions such as the Central Zoo Authority, National Centre for Disease Control, Ministry of Health, Department of Fisheries and Dairy, and Indian Veterinary Research Institute, Bareilly. These partnerships are to provide direction and rally effort to continue preventing throughout the state.
