Aligarh: In the district of Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh, an assistant teacher has been suspended on allegations that he had refused to join in the singing of the National Anthem and Vande Mataram at the morning assembly of Shahpur Qutub Upper Primary School. The case that occurred earlier this week caused a commotion among the school staff and students and has led to a vast amount of debate on the issue of discipline and respect of the national symbols.
As it has been reported, the teacher by the name Samshul Hasan did not only refuse to take part in the recitation, he also made complaints against the practice itself citing it as something unnecessary. His rejection at the morning meeting was considered as a disrespect and indiscipline to the national feelings.
Within few hours, the Basic Education Officer (BSA) of Aligarh, Rakesh Kumar Singh, suspended Hasan (immediately) on the ground that he had breached the professional code of conduct. According to Singh, this behaviour is not acceptable of a government teacher because he/she is giving a bad example to the students and is destroying the spirit of unity.
The BSA has ordered the Block Education Officer to give a thorough investigation into the case. More disciplinary measures will be established after the report of investigation has been received.
Following the controversy, the district education department came out with a reminder to every school to take an active role in the singing of the National Anthem and Vande Mataram at assemblies time. The officials stressed that these practices instilled patriotism, discipline and respect towards the country in the students.
The suspension has caused debates throughout Aligarh on the issues of individual belief against professional responsibilities in state institutions. To curb such cases, local officials have been put on guard to stop such cases and this means a lot about observing decorum and promoting national pride in the learning institutions.
