The official Facebook page of Samajwadi Party (SP) president Akhilesh Yadav was suspended on Friday evening, sparking a sharp political reaction from his party. The Samajwadi Party alleged that the move was a conspiracy by the central and state BJP governments, while government sources clarified that the action was taken by the tech-giant Facebook and the government had nothing to do in it.

The former Uttar Pradesh chief minister’s Facebook account, followed by over eight million users, was suspended around 6pm. Sources revealed that his page was suspended for allegedly posting a “violent sexual post”. The page was frequently being used to share his opinions, criticising government policies, and connecting with supporters across Uttar Pradesh. The suspension has sparked debate over social media accountability and political expression ahead of the upcoming elections.

Samajwadi Party Spokesperson Fakhrul Hassan Chaand confirmed that the party will explore legal process to regain the access to the page.
