Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has been questioned sharply by Samajwadi Party (SP) chief Akhilesh Yadav, who questioned his stance on the Ansal Group controversy on Wednesday. Yadav, while responding to Adityanath’s charge that the SP government had ‘favoured’ the real estate developer, said those who are now alleging had earlier inaugurated projects of the group.

“You would have put a bulldozer instead of going there for the inauguration if everything was wrong.” Yadav said that the government was being inconsistent. He made the remarks following Uttar Pradesh Police lodging charges of cheating, breach of trust, criminal conspiracy and organized crime against the Ansal Group. It came after Chief Minister Adityanath had directed that strict action be taken to safeguard the interests of the homebuyers.

During his remarks in the Uttar Pradesh Assembly during a budget session discussion on Tuesday, Yogi Adityanath accused the Samajwadi Party of allowing Ansal Group to indulge in illicit activities that had duped investors and homebuyers when it ruled. “Ansal was your creation. All its illegal activities have been encouraged under your government,” he stated.

Counter attacking Akhilesh Yadav said that those charging the ruling party had trolled them on similar projects before. Yadav in a post on X (formerly Twitter) said the government was trying to hide its own failure by blaming everybody else. The BJP government would inaugurate malls and hospitals in the same Ansal Golf City complex, host delegates from the G20 meeting in a new hotel there, and allow billions of investments to happen there, he had said.

To support his argument, Yadav shared a video purportedly showing Adityanath inaugurating Lulu Mall in Ansal’s Golf City. But he stressed that, though the government is now waging a fight against projects in the Ansal Group, it has promoted these projects and, in some cases, endorsed them.
