Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray on Monday created an issue during his campaigning tour at the Yavatmal district, reporting that government officials searched his bags when he arrived for a rally.
Thackeray, who was addressing a gathering at Wani in support of the party candidate Sanjay Derkar, said that his belongings were searched by the government’s force when he flew in a helicopter.
Thackeray, while addressing the protestors, wondered whether the same lens would be used to scan others in Indian politics including PM Narendra Modi and top brass leaders, including Home Minister Amit Shah. He said he had no quibble with the fact that election authorities were performing their responsibilities but wondered whether a similar inspection was extended to other leaders in the political arena.
Thackeray questioned if the bags owned by leaders, including Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, and BJP’s Devendra Fadnavis, were also checked ignominiously.
Thackeray also asked his party workers and the voters to note down the identity cards and the pockets of the officials who were checking them. He seemed to incite the powers that be, criticizing the balance and objectivity of checks during the election campaign.
However, the former Maharashtra Chief Minister specifically said that he was not angry with the election authorities who were doing their job. He said that the authorities were just doing what they had to do, and he, too, would do what the team captain expected of him. To a large extent, Thackeray’s comments appear to draw attention to the authenticity and objectivity of the election process and opinion poll reports and, at the same time, demand the same treatment for all political leaders without partiality.
