Two militant commanders of The Resistance Front, the group affiliated with Pakistan’s Lashkar-e-Taiba, were concealing themselves in a house when they were caught in a fire exchange with the security forces in the Indian part of the disputed region of Jammu and Kashmir, Pulwama area on Monday.

The military operation started when special groups of security forces got information on the location of the terrorists in the Nehama area of Pulwama. By these inputs, the security forces and police resorted to a cordon and search operation. Rayees Ahmad and Reyaz Ahmad Dar, both residents of Pulwama district in south Kashmir’s Traal village, were reportedly planning an attack on the security forces when they fired at the arriving forces, which precipitated the gun battle. Pictures from the scene revealed that the house, where the terrorists were located was on fire and producing a billow of black and white smoke.

The Kashmir Zone Police confirmed the ongoing encounter through a tweet: “Encounter has begun at Nihama area of District Pulwama. The Police and security forces are on the operation. Details shall be provided soon. #JammuAndKashmir.”

Until the latest developments, the exchange fire was still in progress at the time of this report, with no information on the casualties, according to a police source.

This comes after a recent event on May 7 this year, where two terrorists were killed in a gun battle with security forces in the Kulgam district of Jammu and Kashmir. Those killed included Basit Dar, who was quite involved in the Resistance Front group, or TRF, which is a terrorist group supported by the Lashkar.

The security scenario of the state is still volatile, and several pieces involving security forces and terrorists have occurred In Jammu and Kashmir. This was mainly evidenced by the presence of key leaders from the Resistance Front to further signify that the region has not completely removed terrorism. These threats are still active, and authorities strive to contain them to keep the situation stable in the region.
