Three died and twelve were injured in a truck—five vehicle tragic road accident on the old Pune-Mumbai highway near Lonavla hill station in Maharashtra. It took place at Battery Hill, which is on the way to Bor Ghat, a place known to be accident-prone due to its slope.

The Lonavla police reported the truck had descended the slope before it experienced a brake failure, causing it to lose all control. It then rammed into five other vehicles, including private cars and perhaps two-wheelers, damaging them heavily and creating havoc on the road.

One of the vehicles in the car wreck was occupied by a 10-year-old girl and her father, with both confirmed dead, said a senior Inspector Suhas Jagtap of the Lonavla police station. In the incident, another person also passed away, but their identity was not confirmed officially.

Twelve other passengers were injured in varying degrees from the crash. The injured were transported to a nearby hospital for medical attention, as the emergency services were rushed to the spot. They, all but a few of whom are currently being treated and reported to be in stable condition, are being put under close watch.

Police are investigating and determining whether it was a mechanical failure or negligence on the part of the truck’s poor maintenance. Once again, a tragic accident highlights the need for stringent vehicle inspection on roads as steep as Bor Ghat.

But the highway was blocked for a few hours; then traffic resumed. Authorities have asked drivers to be careful, and in particular, to beware of hills.
