Only two days after road traffic was reinstated after a tremendous 32-hour long traffic jam, the Mumbai-pune expressway was again hit by intense traffic congestion throughout the weekend, which made commuters frustrated. Saturday saw the peak-hour traffic coming to almost a crawl with vehicles crawling up and down the lengthy stretch of the busy road. The new mayhem was largely blamed on the officials on the extra traffic movement associated with the travel of local body elections, which had greatly contributed to the already heavy traffic congestion at the weekend.

This new surge of congestion followed an unprecedented hiccuping at the beginning of the week. On Tuesday, an accident that occurred with a propylene tanker in the Adoshi tunnel at the Khandala ghat section caused the authorities to close the expressway over a long duration. It was an overturned tanker, and the gas in it was dangerous hence dangerous to the safety of those around. This led to a complicated and time consuming operation by the emergency teams to move the gas safely and remove the damaged car.

The operation took almost 32 hours and ended at a very early time on Thursday and traffic was finally restored towards 2 am. This event caused the longest traffic congestion in the history of the Mumbai -Pune Expressway that is 94.5 km long. Thousands of commuters were left without any place to go, and most of them were unable to get basic needs including food, drinking water, and restrooms.

The fact that traffic jams have been restored hardly two years after the big incident has brought up issues again of traffic control and preparedness on one of the most important transportations routes of Maharashtra, particularly during emergencies and in times of high traffic.
