Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. K. Stalin and the principal opposition party AIADMK welcomed the landmark verdict on Tuesday handed down by the Coimbatore Mahila Court in the notorious Pollachi sexual assault and extortion case. Nine men were sentenced to life in prison till death, and an amount of ₹ 85 lakh was ordered to be paid to the women victims, bringing long-awaited justice to the victims of the 2019 case that has sent shockwaves across the state.

Referring to the verdict, CM Stalin said, “Justice has been done for the atrocities by the evil criminals, including the AIADMK functionary”. He also lashed out at people in the AIADMK, who were supposed to have tried to protect the accused, and told them to feel ashamed.

Even the AIADMK had no quarrel to pick with the judgment, though one of the guilty individuals, a former party functionary, was involved. The party drew focus on how only the AIADMK government led by then CM Edappadi K. Palaniswami had conveyed the matter to the CBI to make it an impartial investigation. The party made use of the opportunity to take a dig at the ruling DMK, which the party claimed politicized the issue and did not call for the same investigation in a recent case of sexual assault on an Anna University student.

At the same time, actor-politician and TVK leader Vijay praised the decision of the court, which, according to him, would bring comfort and justice to the survivors. He also proposed the establishment of fast-track courts so that the cases of sexual violence against women could receive speedy trials and justice in a span of 90 days.
