On Thursday, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) suspended party legislator Humayun Kabir following a row after he declared that he would lay the foundation stone of a replica of Babri Masjid in Murshidabad district in West Bengal. Kolkata Mayor and state minister Firhad Hakim stated that communal politics is not the agenda of the party and pointed out that Kabir had been warned three times before by the disciplinary committee of the party. The party is dismissing him with the approval of the chairperson and national general secretary of the party. He will not relate himself to the party, Hakim added.

Kabir, the Bharatpur MLA and a resident of Rejinagar had said that he would plant the foundation stone on December 6. Hakim condemned Kabir by making Beldanga, a place with communal implications, the location of the project, which may cause unrest and possibly benefiting Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) before the elections.

In spite of the suspension, Kabir affirmed that he would still hold the foundation stone ceremony and announced that he was going to start his own political party in the same month. “I welcome the decision. This is petty since I was not in a position of holding any post. I will step out of the party tomorrow and start a party of my own on December 12. The TMC will be forced to incur the cost of being kicked out of power. December 6 will see the laying of the foundation stone. I am going to oppose the BJP and the TMC on the next election, said Kabir.

TMC leader above all Mamata Banerjee, without mentioning Kabir directly, accused the BJP of having a connection with some of the TMC leaders and she said that they were being financed to propagate communal tensions before the elections. “BJP is staying in contact with some of our leaders. They are being financed to create communal tension and shift the blame to the TMC. This won’t happen. I do not desire new riots at Murshidabad, I said.”
