Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarma, the chief of Tipra Motha Party (TMP), has given a stern warning to the BJP-led coalition government in Tripura, claiming that the party might withdraw its support in case the rights of the native people in the state of Tripura, the Tiprasa, are not honoured and enforced. During a speech at a programme of the party in Karbook, Gomati district, Debbarma stressed that the interest of the Tiprasa people in the TMP is non-negotiable and the interests of the wider Greater Tipraland.

The state of Tripura has 60 seats in its assembly, with the BJP (33), TMP (13), and the Indigenous People’s Front of Tripura (IPFT) having one legislator. As noted by Debbarma, even though Union Home Minister Amit Shah promised to conclude an agreement to boost the progress of the Tiprasa people, the promised action under the Tiprasa accord, signed in March 2024, was not thoroughly implemented.

“Personally, I have even met with the Home Minister and asked him to execute the Tiprasa accord. How much time should we take to grant our rights?” Debbarma replied, repeating his word that TMP is patient. He also explained that TMP is not only a political party but also a mission directed at the development and recognition of the Tiprasa people. Although the IPFT might still continue with the BJP after several years of promises going unrewarded, we will not wait five or six years.

Debbarma, the grandson of Maharaja Bir Bikram Kishore Manikya, emphasised the respect that the people of the Tiprasa possess, and that they are not beggars and can not be satisfied with empty promises. He also gave a strong message to the other political parties that any effort to buy the Tiprasa votes would not work because TMP will organise the community to oppose such a move. His statements have preconditioned the increase in political tension in Tripura because the coalition government is under pressure to keep the promises to the indigenous people.
