The monthly salaries and pensions spending of Telangana has been skyrocketing in the last ten years reaching almost 6000 crore/month as per the Chief Secretary K. Ramakrishna Rao. At a conference on the recommendations of the 16th Finance Commission, Rao pointed out that the amount of salaries payable by the state had increased four-fold compared to the amount it would have paid during the establishment of Telangana in 2014.
He disclosed that the number of pay revisions during the years has resulted in a close of 300 percent rise in salary and pension obligations. Most of this amendments came together with election years and they considerably increased the economic cost on the state treasury. The increasing wage bill has attracted its share with the huge disparity in salaries between the various groups of government workers.
Leading in the list of highest earners are chief engineers in state-run power companies like Telangana State power generation Corporation Limited (TGGENCO), Telangana State transmission Corporation Limited (TSTRANSCO), and Telangana Northern power distribution company Limited (TSNPDCL), where certain chief engineers earn up to 7 lakh a month. Meanwhile, there is news that some of the Class 4 workers, such as sweepers in certain departments are making salaries that many observers have been surprised at. Nonetheless, the minimum salaries of workers in the municipal setting include sanitation employees or drivers who are usually paid around 28,000 monthly.
The rapid increase in government salaries has also made competition on jobs in the public sector to be on the increase. As Rao pointed out, there are 799 candidates contending over every one of the 563 newly announced Group-1 positions. The coaching industry in the state is experiencing a rapid development as aspirants are known to spend years preparing.
