The number of Odia workers who have died in a deadly chemical factory explosion in Telangana increased to nine on Saturday, said a senior official, citing that the identity of the last victim was identified through DNA-based matching.
The ninth victim was a native of Sukarpada village in Cuttack district of Odisha and was named Purna Chandra Sahu, as confirmed through Officer on Special Duty (OSD) in the Directorate of Odisha Parivaar named Pritish Panda. After the severe disfigurement inflicted by the explosion, his identity was determined after forensic testing.
The tragedy happened on June 30 at one of the pharmaceutical manufacturing units in the Pashamylaram area, Sangareddy district of Telangana. The big explosion destroyed the lives of nine Odia workers, besides injuring a few more.
As per the official, it involved the death of three persons in Ganjam district, two in Cuttack district, two in Nabarangpur district, one in Balasore district, and one in Jajpur district. Formalities are completed, and the bodies of all the deceased are handed over to their respective families.
Panda also notified that 14 people were involved in the explosion in Odisha. Two of the four injured persons have already been released after they have received treatment, and two remain under treatment. One of them, Samir Padhi, a boy of the district Ganjam, had acquired 35 per cent burn injuries and was already undergoing care in the ICU. He has already shown some improvements and has since been transferred out of the intensive care.
As an answer to the tragedy, Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Friday declared an ex gratia of 10 lakhs of rupees on account of each dead worker to the families of the victims. This will be done through the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund (CMRF), with the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) saying that this will be compensated. The state government even promised the injured people and their families to bear this hard moment.
