Voting for MPs constituencies in Tamil Nadu has begun today. However, this election is in the first phase, which is the general election, and 20 other states and Union Territories. Conspicuous voting was led by the Governor of Tamil Nadu, RN Ravi, Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, MK Stalin, and his preceding successors, O Panneerselvam and EK Palaniswami. These leaders cast their votes at various polling stations across the state. This message from Ravi and Stalin to the people to take an active part and fulfill their duties was democratic.

The DMK leader visited MDK leader Kanimozhi (a candidate in Thoothukudi District), his wife Durga Stalin, BJP leaders L Murugan (another candidate in Nilgiris), and Tamilisai Soundararajan (another candidate for South Chennai) to cast their vote at the same ward in which Stalin was also registered as a voter.

The electoral process, spanning seven phases, commenced at 7 am across 102 parliamentary constituencies in 21 states and Union Territories, with polling concluding at 6 pm. Chennai’s southern constituency witnessed a turnout of 28.92%, while the northern and central constituencies recorded 29.05% and 28.08%, respectively. By 1 PM, the voter turnout in Tamil Nadu stood at 39.51%, with 39 constituencies participating in the polling.

In a triangular competition in Tamil Nadu, the DMK, which is the ruling party, the AIADMK, which is a former ruling coalition party, and the BJP, which is the nationalist political party, are pitching for votes. Thus, this fight on the electoral grounds drives home the fact that Tamil Nadu has the capacity to dictate the national narratives as all the major political parties compete to be in a very influential position in the state.

Along with the polling day from the start to the end, emphasis is given to the fairness and stability of the electoral process. Taciturns appeals to the voters, prompting the citizens to participate in the voting day and strictly adhere to the COVID protocols. Elections outcome in Tamil Nadu is to not only define the state’s political track and trend but, latterly, for the direction of national politics.
