New Delhi: Two new judges have been appointed to the Supreme Court of India, and this was followed by the oath-taking ceremony, which was conducted on Thursday morning. The oath of office took place with Chief Justice of India (CJI) Dhananjaya Y Chandrachud, thus inaugurating a momentous era for the judiciary. The promotion of Justice Singh is of particular significance due to the fact that he is only the first judge from Manipur who would be serving at the Supreme Court of India more than seven decades after India got its independence.

The central government approved their appointments on July 16, clearing the recommendations of the Supreme Court collegium. This step also added the maximum number of sanctioned strength judges to the Supreme Court, which includes the CJI, 34 judges. A bench formed by the CJI Chandrachud-led collegium recommended it on July 11 based on factors like their seniority, merit, and integrity in the administration of justice. Others in the collegium were justices Sanjiv Khanna, Bhushan R Gavai, Surya Kant, and Hrishikesh Roy.

New Justices in Supreme Court

Justice Kotiswar Singh has also been promoted, and the North-East region has got its first representation in the Supreme Court after a long wait. In passing the resolution, the collegium attempted to explain that Justice Singh’s appointment means that the SC will be enriched by the perspective of a jurist hailing from the state of Manipur.

Justice R Mahadevan of the Madras High Court, who joined the SC in October 2013, also diversifies the bench. His appointment indicates that the collegium considers social diversity and that he is from a backward community in Tamil Nadu. In the collegium’s resolution of July 11, the realization of the-sixth judge’s need from the backward community was noted to be of great value to the social justice-minded judiciary.
