In the midst of speculation and suspense in the political circles of Maharashtra as a result of the so-called demise of the Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar in a plane crash in Baramati, Praful Patel, senior NCP leader, on Friday, made it clear that there was no decision on whether Sunetra Pawar would be put in any leadership position at all.

In response to the media following a meeting with the Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis at his home, Patel said that the party is still in the process of discussions and that they would take due process before they could announce a successor. He attested that a number of the NCP leaders had a meeting with Fadnavis in which he was told that the party would shortly make a formal decision on the new leadership.

Sunetra Pawar is yet to have any decision made on it. A NCP MLAs meeting will be held soon and decision on whether Ajit Pawar is to be replaced or not will be made keeping in mind the feeling of party workers and the people, Patel said.

The abrupt death of Ajit Pawar earlier this week has caused shockwaves in the state causing both sadness and political confusion. Being the leader of one of the powerful NCP groups and one of the most influential members of the state government, his resignation has also cast the question of the future of the party and the position of deputy chief minister.

As speculations are still being made on who is likely to come in the leadership position, NCP leaders have reiterated that the immediate focus of the party is unity and stability. According to the members of the party, consultations with the MLAs and senior leadership will be very instrumental in deciding the way forward.
