As a big push to hydropower development in Arunachal Pradesh, Satluj Jal Vidyut Nigam Limited (SJVN) has disbursed ₹269.98 crore land compensation for the 3,097 MW Etalin hydroelectric project which is in Dibang Valley. According to an official statement, the compensation amount was deposited in the joint account of the Deputy Commissioner and the District Land Revenue and Settlement Officer on March 26.

On Thursday, the Chief Minister, Pema Khandu, chaired a high-level meeting of review meeting in Tawang, which confirmed this development. Additional senior officials present included Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein, Chief Secretary Manish Gupta, Power Commissioner Sonam Chombay and many others. The project head, Shiraj Swan, handed over the cheque worth Rs. Rs compensation in my hand formally to the Deputy Commissioner of Dibang Valley Pagli Sora.

A memorandum of agreement for handing over the Etalin Hydroelectric project and four other major hydropower projects in the district having a total installed capacity of 5,097 MW to SJVN was signed with the state government on August 21, 2023. When combined, these projects are expected to receive a total investment of about ₹60,000 crore, which represents a paradigmatic step in the infrastructure and energy of the region.

The company has achieved its development goals while respecting local communities: SJVN Chairman and Managing Director Raj Kumar Chaudhary. “SJVN is committed to responsible and inclusive development of Arunachal Pradesh. And yet,” he said, “releasing the compensation amount — particularly at significant milestones such as the ones resulting from the project also serves the interests of local communities with the rights to be amortized and those of national infrastructure goals.”

The Etalin project will involve two power dams on the Dri River and Talo River downstream of Etalin village, with an underground powerhouse between the confluence of the Talo and Dri rivers. The project is to be commissioned by December 2033 as a part of SJVN’s overarching commitment to contribute towards India’s clean energy transition via hydro, solar, wind, and thermal projects.
