Six workers are feared trapped in an under-construction stretch of the Srisailam Left Bank Canal (SLBC) tunnel in Telangana’s Nagarkurnool district when a section of the roof collapsed Saturday. The work at the time was to construct the tunnel, and the incident was reported to have taken place around 12-13 km deep inside the tunnel.
Initial information from a company overseeing the project indicated that 6 to 8 workers may be trapped, a senior police official said. Emergency teams are currently working to find and remove the people stuck inside rescue operations.
Chief Minister Revanth Reddy of the Telangana expressed deep shock over the incident and told the officials to immediately start rescue and relief operations. The Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) made a statement saying that once he got a message that there was an accident, he had asked his key departments like the district administration, police, fire services and Hyderabad Disaster Response and Asset Protection Agency (HYDRAA) to immediately rush to the site.
According to the official press release, some of the people suffered injuries, but the exact number of injuries was not provided. Emergency medical teams have been deployed to respond to those people who got hurt.
The Chief Minister had directed then Telangana Irrigation Minister N Uttam Kumar Reddy, advisor Adityanath Das and senior irrigation officials to rush to the accident site through a special helicopter as per the emergency, in response to which the Minister and his team reached there. Authorities are on the job around the clock to evaluate the situation, check the safety of the trapped workers and just in general prevent other mishaps.
