Gangtok: The flash flood tragedy in Sikkim has claimed the lives of over 60 individuals, with more than 105 still missing as search and rescue efforts persist. This natural disaster has wrought havoc in the picturesque Himalayan state, resulting in the destruction of more than 1,655 homes and the sweeping away of 14 bridges across four districts.

In West Bengal’s Jalpaiguri district, authorities have reported the recovery of 40 bodies downstream of the Teesta River, with 10 of them successfully identified. Simultaneously, Sikkim’s death toll has risen to over 26.

The crucial lifeline of Sikkim, National Highway 10, has been severely affected due to road surface damage and bridge destruction along the Teesta River. Ongoing efforts to reopen and widen the section between Rangpo and Singtam are underway.

While alternative routes to the state capital, Gangtok, remain accessible via the East Sikkim district, areas beyond Mangan in North Sikkim are currently cut off, posing transportation challenges for the region.
