On Thursday, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah firmly thrashed the growing speculation over a shift in leadership in the state, saying there is no vacancy in the CM position. In reply to media questions in his visit to Delhi, Siddaramaiah said, “I am here as I promise to be in front of you. I am a Chief Minister of Karnataka. That is what DK Shivakumar said and I am saying it too… It is not vacant.”

His comments are amid high speculations that there is a possibility of Siddaramaiah resigning to allow his deputy DK Shivakumar to succeed as Chief Minister later this year. Siddaramaiah, however, clarified that come what may, he is not going to step down in the middle of his five-year term, thus quashing such speculations.

The speculations about the change of power have been rife for a few months now, with certain quarters in the Congress party pushing to promote DK Shivakumar. The rumour has gained momentum in the past few weeks, and rumours have it that there is internal pressure and dirt digging all in the political front.

The visit to Delhi is being regarded as an important one because Siddaramaiah will have an opportunity to meet senior Congress leaders, including the party president Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi. There has been no official agenda that has been revealed yet, but the time of the meetings has added to the speculation of political reshuffling.

Siddaramaiah had also made the same assertions in early this month, saying, “I will serve a complete term as chief minister. I will be the chief minister for five years.” Appearing to agree with the decision of the high command, DK Shivakumar said he would obey the party and work as a team of loyalists to the leadership of Siddaramaiah.

At the moment, the leadership seems comfortable, and both leaders are showing a united face despite the unending political gossip.
